The Mirage

Throughout these years, I have seen appetite for (mis) using the organizational design lever, especially when it comes to (re) structuring (i.e. composition of organizational units and the reporting relationships among internal units). In organizations with a “command & control” leadership style, every single (re) structuring communication could be understood as an end in itself, as the way to redistribute power within top management and its teams. “One day, you fly in the Chairman´s corporate jet; next day, you are sitting in a cubicle… until the next reorganization wave rescues you”. Mid management live under the impression that any day, anytime, anybody can be promoted or demoted depending on the music playing. Instead of taking advantage of the company´s capabilities, resources dance around the organizational structure, not always emphasizing elements that give sustainable competitive advantage.
